India once upon a time a land of best educationists, scholars and the best education system, is now facing a time of crisis. In the Central Teacher Eligibility Test 2012, a shocking total of 93% aspirants failed to clear the test.
Of the overall 8, 61,231 registered aspirants around 76,004 could not appear in the test due to assembly elections in five states. From the rest who appeared only 55,422 barely managed to clear either paper 1 or paper 2 or both.
These poor results show that even the future teachers are not serious about studies. When these aspirants will further become teachers, what kind of education they will impart is beyond any doubt.
Today our education system is in a fail state. Present system only lays emphasis on marks and percentage, not on what kind of education is actually being imparted. The quality of teachers and education has gone down over the past few decades and is the most important factor behind deteriorating standards of school education in India.
“The problem is complicated because if an insincere person gets into the teaching field then the whole generation to follow has to pay the price”, says Sunaina, a B.ed student.
CTET is a test of eligibility does not guaranty a job as a teacher, as a result most of the aspirants appear the test casually which makes pass percentage low.
Sudhir kapoor, an MBA student, states “Government, both central and state should conduct examinations like Indian Civil Services and introduce Indian education services with one year of training with jobs guaranteed, just like private sectors than India can get better teachers and better educational environment.”
The Ministry of Human Resource and Development, worried about the result has asked the CBSE to analyse the results institution wise, so that they can improve on their teaching and training.
On the whole the most respected profession of teaching is losing its importance. Students prefer this profession after failing to qualify as an engineer, a doctor or any other desired profession. Being a teacher is their last resort.
What is the need of hour is to make amendment for a better result and education. Instead of having test like CTET, we should have tests that analyses a person’s ability for being a teacher and not the eligibility. What if a person is eligible for being a teacher but couldn’t handle the classroom environment and a student’s behaviour towards studies, he’s a failure again.
